Vila Real, capital of the province of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, is the largest city in the Douro Wine Region. It is home to approximately 30,000 inhabitants and provides all the services you would expect from a major town: cultural activities, shopping, cafés and restaurants, as well as the essential hospitals, clinics and chemists.

From Exit 26 off the IP4 Motorway (marked as “A” on the map):
At the first roundabout, go straight. At the second roundabout (“B” on the map), take the 3rd exit (left), following the signs to Sabrosa/Régua/Casa de Mateus. Follow this road for 600 m as it bends fairly sharply to the left. After the next bend (to the right), start slowing down – you’ll soon be turning left into a tiny street with a “Restaurante da Ponte” sign on the corner. Drive up this narrow two-way street, and you will find the arched stone entrance to the estate right in front of you.
WARNING: if you happen approach the estate entrance from the top (with the arched stone entrance on your left), please do not attempt to drive in from that angle – it is likely that your car will get seriously scratched. You may have to drive down the narrow street to the main road and come back up.
